How Dermal Fillers Can Enhance Your Appearance

How Dermal Fillers Can Enhance Your Appearance

Nobody wants to look in the mirror and see a face that looks older than they feel inside. Fortunately, dermal fillers can enhance your appearance by filling in lines and wrinkles and adding volume where it has been lost.

At Serendipity Med Spa in Southlake, Texas, our team of expert aestheticians regularly uses dermal fillers to help our clients “turn back the clock” on an aging face. They’re a quick, easy, and relatively painless way to enhance your appearance, and we’re sure you’re going to like the results you see.

Dermal filler nuts and bolts

Dermal fillers are injectable gels designed to add volume to your face and hands that have developed fine lines and wrinkles and a hollowed-out look as you’ve gotten older. When you’re young, your body produces large amounts of collagen and elastin, fibrous proteins that provide strength and resilience for your skin.

After about age 25, though, production of these proteins decreases, leading to sags and wrinkles from lost volume (static wrinkles). Environmental factors, such as the sun’s UV rays and smoking, contribute to the depletion. Some dermal fillers work to stimulate new collagen production, filling in the lines, while others add volume in the areas deficient in the protein.

Dermal fillers were introduced in the 1970s, but they were made from collagen derived from cows, which presented a problem. The material is foreign to the human body, and some people proved allergic to it or had other adverse reactions. Patients had to take a sensitivity test to ensure they could tolerate the substance before they could be treated.

In addition, the bovine collagen caused a lot of swelling, and the treatment didn’t last long before it had to be repeated. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that newer, safer gels were introduced.

What goes into a filler?

Modern dermal fillers can be made from a number of different materials, including:

Hyaluronic acid (HA)

HA occurs naturally in your body, where it brings moisture to your skin to keep it plump and hydrated. That means HA fillers are well-tolerated. They have a gel-like consistency, and results last from 6-12 months before the body absorbs the material. Most HA fillers now contain the anesthetic lidocaine, which minimizes discomfort both during and after treatment. FDA-approved HA fillers include:

Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

Calcium hydroxylapatite is a natural mineral that helps give bones their strength. As part of a filler, the particles of calcium are suspended in a smooth gel. The consistency of CaHA fillers is thicker than HA fillers, and CaHA fillers generally last longer, too, about 12 months. Calcium hydroxylapatite also helps stimulate new collagen production, which means it can treat deeper lines and wrinkles than HA fillers. The most commonly used FDA-approved CaHA filler is Radiesse®.

Deoxycholic acid

Deoxycholic acid breaks down and absorbs dietary fat in your body. When synthetic deoxycholic acid is injected under the chin (submental area), it destroys the fat cells that give you a “double chin” and provides a more defined jawline that lasts as long as you don’t gain a lot of weight. Kybella® is currently the only FDA-approved injectable for the chin area.

How specific dermal fillers can enhance your appearance

The FDA has approved different dermal fillers for different conditions:

Juvéderm

This versatile line of HA fillers attracts water molecules, bringing them to the skin and binding them to the cells. In the process, they smooth out facial wrinkles and creases, plump up lips, fill in hollowed cheeks, and even reduce the appearance of scars. Different Juvéderm-brand products treat each of the different facial areas.

Restylane

Like Juvéderm, Restylane plumps up your skin to restore lost volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and different products in the line treat different areas. Restylane Silk plumps and smooths lips and softens mouth wrinkles, while Restylane Lyft fills in hollows on your hands and cheeks, as well as addresses smile and marionette lines.

Belotero Balance and Radiesse

Both of these anti-aging injectables can restore youthful volume and smoothness to your skin, but Belotero is more appropriate for delicate areas, including under the eyes and in the tear troughs. These are among the most versatile dermal fillers, which also provide long-lasting, natural-looking results.
