Turn Back the Clock on Aging Skin With a Chemical Peel

Turn Back the Clock on Aging Skin With a Chemical Peel

Genetics, sun damage, and even your environment 一 hello, Texas heat and winds! 一 can contribute to common signs of aging, such as fine lines and a dull complexion. A chemical peel is a fast way to revitalize your skin’s appearance and turn back the clock on aging skin.

Here, our team of expert providers at Serendipity Med Spa in Southlake, Texas, explain how chemical peels can correct fine lines, hyperpigmentation, dull complexion, and other signs of aging.

Chemical peels 101

A chemical peel 一 is also known as derma peeling or chemexfoliation 一 is a procedure that relies on a chemical solution to exfoliate your skin. As each layer of dead, dull skin is removed, more youthful skin takes its place and freshens up your complexion. Chemical peels can improve the tone and texture of your skin, reduce the appearance of sunspots and acne scars, and smooth out fine lines.

Chemical peels vary greatly in intensity — and how much downtime is required — depending on which type of chemical solutions are used. Chemical solutions may contain retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (such as lactic acid or glycolic acid), salicylic acid, trichloroacetic acid, or carbolic acid.

Light peel

Also known as superficial chemical peels, light chemical peels penetrate only the top layer of the skin, called the epidermis. Superficial peels use mild chemical solutions so these peels don't require extensive downtime.

As your top layer of skin sloughs away, you might see slight peeling of your skin. Shedding that dead layer reveals bright, revitalized skin.

Medium peel

Medium peels penetrate deeper into your skin and can reach the dermis, or middle layer. These peels require a bit more aftercare as they may affect your skin more than light chemical peels.

Deep peel

Deep chemical peels utilize the strongest chemical solutions out of the three types of peels. They thoroughly penetrate the top and middle layers, but the recovery can take up to 21 days. During that time, it’s important to apply any recommended ointments and follow all post-peel instructions.

Refresh your look with a chemical peel

We offer the Rhonda Allison Minus 10 peel and the Replenix Advanced peel at Serendipity Med Spa. Depending on your skin health, your aesthetic goals, and your areas of concern, our team recommends the right peel for you and reviews all preparation and post-care steps you need to take.

You might consider a peel if you’re seeking smoother skin, a more even skin tone, reduced appearance of fine lines around your eyes and mouth, and reduced wrinkles caused by aging and sun damage.

Getting ready for your chemical peel

Before you’re cleared for a chemical peel, it’s important to review your health history. Let our team know if you’re prone to cold sores, if your skin scars easily, or if you take any herbal supplements.

You may need to alter or temporarily pause some medications prior to receiving a chemical peel, but never adjust your medications unless directed to do so by a health professional.
